Adventure travel insurance

These days, the adventurous traveller has more options to get away from the holiday crowds and do something a bit different.

Apart from the normal insurance cover for illness or accident, cover for loss, theft or damage of your personal possessions, disruption to holiday plans and emergency repatriation, you will need extra cover for these adventure sports. These activities usually involve more risk, especially with the possibility of broken bones or even death, so your insurance will cost you more.

When you cruise downhill on your skis thinking you are in complete control, who knows when another skier or snowboarder will veer off course, knock you over and break your leg. These kinds of accident happen unexpectedly and even the most experienced of skiers can be the victim. Besides the traditional winter sports such as skiing, ice skating and snowboarding, the more adventurous might like to try, tobogganing, heli-skiing or snow mobiling. However, if you want to try these different activities, be aware that they will not be covered by most skiing and snowboarding insurance policies. You need to make sure that you have the right insurance cover for whichever activities you wish to try.

There are many kinds of water sport, such as canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, water skiing, jet boating, jet skiing, surfing, windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling. Besides the risk of broken bones, there is the possibility of drowning or, in the case of ocean water sports, attacks from sharks or other sea creatures.

Air sports are particularly dangerous and will need adequate cover. These include flying small aircraft or helicopters, gliding, paragliding, parachuting, parasailing, skydiving and hot air ballooning.

Other popular adventure sports include bungee jumping, abseiling, rock climbing, go carting, motorcycling, mountain biking, sand yachting, horse riding and horse jumping. There are also safari trips and even camel or elephant riding. All of these extreme sports have their hazards and need adequate insurance cover.

Many of these sports can also be affected by adverse weather conditions, so extra cover to compensate for loss of time doing the sport you love is also necessary.

Even taking part in more traditional sports such as golf, cricket, badminton, baseball, cycling, rugby, soccer, archery, netball, athletics, squash, swimming, tennis, volleyball and hockey can incur serious injury and need cover.

When going on a holiday that includes any kind of sport, especially adventure sports, make sure you have the correct travel insurance.
